«Une lettre ne joue pas seulement un rôle dans le mot, elle est aussi quelque chose qui a sa fin en elle-même», pense Eric Gill.
Fils d’un prêtre de l’Eglise anglicane dissidente, Gill figure parmi les artistes du livre les plus importants. Il étudie d’abord l’architecture puis travaille en tant que sculpteur et que graveur sur pierre. Il dessine notamment des lettres pour les chemins de fer. Anglican, il se convertit au catholicisme en 1913 et exécute alors des bas-reliefs pour la cathédrale de Westminster.Après la Première Guerre mondiale, il grave des lettres pour des mémoriaux de la guerre. Il se tourne ensuite de plus en plus nettement vers l’art du livre. Il reçoit des commandes des éditions Insel de Leipzig. Il collabore à la Golden Cockerel Press de Robert Gibbings dès 1924. En 1926, il peignit le nom de Douglas Cleverdon sur le fronton de la librairie de ce dernier à Bristol. Stanley Morrison, de la société Monotype propose à Gill de créer l’alphabet entier et de lui vendre les droits de ces lettres typographiques sans empattements (connues sous le nom de Gill sans). Convaincu du bienfait de l’industrialisation de son alphabet, il en dessina un italique et différentes graisses (maigre, demi-gras, gras, etc. ). Ces lettres comptent parmi les plus importantes, les plus lisibles, les plus originales et les plus utilisées de la typographie moderne. On lui doit également 10 autres familles de caractères (Perpetua, Joanna, Pilgrim, etc.). Il fut, avec Gordon Craig et Lucien Pissarro, membre fondateur de la Society of Wood Engravers (1920). Entre 1915 et 1939, Gill illustra 138 livres, la plupart avec des gravures sur bois. Henry Chapront, graveur sur bois, écrit dans Papyrus en février 1929: «Les graveurs anglais sont plus raffinés et d’un métier fort savant. Eric Gill fait des bonnes illustrations, moyenâgeuses à souhait.»
